TRAILER TOW HARNESS INSTALLATION

An adaptor harness has been developed to allow trailer lights to be connected to the Premier electronically controlled lighting and turn signal system. The harness is equipped with relays to protect the circuitry in the headlamp and lamp outage modules. This is the only approved method of connecting trailer lights to a Premier.

PARTS REQUIRED

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

FOR 1988 & 1989 MODELS

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the carpet from the right side of the luggage compartment at the wheel house to gain access to the black 10-way harness connector (lamp outage module connector if so equipped).

3. Disconnect the black 10-way connector to the right of the radio speaker. If the vehicle is equipped with a lamp outage module, disconnect the rear most black 10-way connector from the module.
4. Disconnect the gray 1-way connector in the wheel house area near the 10-way connector.

5. Disconnect the black 2-way connector just to the left of the trunk lamp near the center of the rear window package shelf.

6. Interconnect the trailer tow harness to the 10-way, 1-way and 2-way connectors.

7. Drill a 1/8 inch hole in the package shelf near the trunk lamp, being careful not to pierce the interior trim. Attach ground wire to the shelf with the screw provided.

Figure 1:

8. Secure the trailer tow harness to the package shelf harness with tie straps and route the harness along the right side of the trunk as shown in Figure 1. Secure the harness as shown with tie straps.
9. Remove the carpet and cover for the spare tire compartment.

Figure 2:

10. Using a 3/4" hole saw or frame punch, make a hole in the vertical wall of the spare tire compartment as shown in Figure 2. Coat the bare edge of the hole with a zinc based or epoxy chromate primer.
11. Push the unterminated end of the harness through the hole and seat the grommet. Route the harness under the vehicle in a manner that will make it least susceptible to damage to the point where the trailer hook up will be made.

NOTE: IF THERE IS A REQUIREMENT FOR BACKUP LIGHTS ON THE TRAILER BEING USED, THE HARNESS HAS A PROVISION FOR THE LIGHTS. THE BROWN WIRE WITH THE GREEN TRACER IN THE HARNESS IS LEFT OPEN AT BOTH ENDS. THE WIRE MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE BROWN WIRE WITH THE GREEN TRACER IN THE VEHICLE HARNESS (BACKUP LIGHT FEED) IN THE GRAY 10-WAY CONNECTOR AT THE REAR SEAT BACK SUPPORT. FUSE # 3 MUST ALSO BE CHANGED FROM A 5 AMP TO A 10 AMP FUSE TO ALLOW FOR THE ADDITIONAL LOAD OF THE TRAILER BACKUP LIGHTS.

12. Trailer wiring:

- Determine the type of connector to be used.

- Determine the function of each trailer wire.

- Be sure the vehicle wire functions and trailer wire functions are the same before the connections are made. The connections made to the unterminated end of the harness should be soldered and insulated with heat shrink tubing.

13. Connect the negative battery cable and perform a functional check of the trailer lights.

14. Reinstall the spare tire cover and carpet.
FOR 1990 MODELS

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Disconnect the 10-way connector located under the rear package shelf on the right side. If the vehicle is equipped with a lamp outage module, disconnect the outboard 10-way connector.

3. Disconnect the 8-way connector to the deck lid harness under the package at the right side.

4. Disconnect the black 2-way connector just to the left of the trunk lamp near the center of the package shelf.

5. Interconnect the jumper harness PN 5252483 8-way connectors to the vehicle harness.

6. Interconnect the trailer tow harness to the 10-way, 2-way, and 1-way connectors.
