Speedometer- Intermittent Operation
90AMCJEEP06 NO.: 08-58-90GROUP: ELECTRICAL
DATE: Sept. 24, 1990
SUBJECT: Intermittent Speedometer Operation
MODELS: 1988-90 Eagle Premier
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Vehicle may experience an intermittent speedometer operation. This condition is caused by an inadequate speed sensor signal to the speedometer module located in the instrument cluster.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Speed Sensor Patch Harness 4604234
2 Tie Straps 6015756
1 Heat Shrink Tube 4419644
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the three nuts and two wiring connectors from the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and remove the ECU.
3. Disconnect the eight way connector between the ECU wiring harness and the instrument panel wiring harness.
FIGURE 1:
4. Locate the round insulation retaining clip under the heater/air conditioner housing (Figure 1).
5. Drill a 1/2 inch hole through the bulkhead one inch to the left of the round insulation retaining clip (Figure 1). Remove all metal burrs from around the drilled hole.
FIGURE 2:
FROM THE ENGINE SIDE, INSPECT THE BULKHEAD AREA BELOW THE HEATER FAN MOTOR AND VERIFY THAT VACUUM LINES AND FUEL LINES ARE CLEAR OF THIS AREA BEFORE DRILLING (FIGURE 2).
6. Disconnect the speed sensor connector from the injector wiring harness at the rear of the left cylinder head.
FIGURE 3:
7. Connect the speed sensor patch harness to the speed sensor and to the injector wiring harness. Route the speed sensor patch harness along the existing ECU wire harness and secure with tie straps shown in Figure 3.
8. Insert the speed sensor patch harness through the 1/2 inch drilled hole in the bulkhead and fully seat the speed sensor patch harness grommet in the drilled hole.
FIGURE 4:
9. Locate the eight way connector on the instrument panel wiring harness and cut the wires for circuits K86 and K87 (Figure 4).
10 . Strip one inch of insulation from both wires that were cut and 1/2 inch of
insulation from wires on the speed sensor patch harness.
11. Cut the piece of heat shrink tube (P/N 4419644) in half so that you have two one inch long pieces of heat shrink tube.
12. Position one piece of heat shrink tube on each wire of the speed sensor patch harness.
FIGURE 5:
13. Solder the red/light blue wire from the speed sensor patch harness to the white wire (red/light blue on 1990 vehicles) from the instrument panel wire harness (Figure 5). USE ROSIN CORE SOLDER
14. Solder the red/black wire from the speed sensor patch harness to the red wire (red/black on 1990 vehicles) from the instrument panel wire harness (Figure 5). USE ROSIN CORE SOLDER
15. Center the heat shrink tube over each solder joint and shrink tube using an air heat gun.
16. Tape the two wires together using electrical tape (friction tape).
17. Connect the eight way connector between the instrument panel wire harness and the ECU wire harness.
18. Secure the speed sensor patch harness to the ECU harness with a tie strap.
19. Install both ECU connectors to the ECU and insure that all wire terminals and both connectors are fully engaged to the ECU.
20. Install the ECU to the instrument panel with the three retaining nuts.
21. Connect the battery negative terminal.
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
