SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Poor radio reception, noisy stations or static (may be variable with engine speed) when equipped with 4.0L engine (Jeep) or 3.0L engine (Premier) and factory-installed radio (FM band only). This condition is most evident in low radio signal strength areas such as, hilly/mountainous terrain and distances greater than 35 miles from the transmitter. This condition may not be the fault of the radio.

SERVICE DIAGNOSIS

This bulletin will only address interference (static) that is being generated by the ECU. Before replacing the ECU it is necessary to verify that the ECU is the likely cause of the problem. To verify that the condition exists, operate the radio with the engine running. If the static is present, turn the engine off and operate the radio with the ignition switch in the accessory position. If the static is now gone, it may be generated by the ECU. If the static is still present, it is being generated from another source and replacing the ECU will not correct the problem. Refer to the service manual for diagnostics.
