Oxygen Sensor: Description and Operation

The oxygen sensor, located in the exhaust pipe behind the exhaust manifold, measures exhaust gas oxygen content, then relays this information to the ECU. As the air/fuel ratio varies from the ideal, the sensor output voltage changes with the change in the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. The ECU then corrects this ratio by changing injector opening time, based on the signal received from the sensor.
