Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove A/C drive belt, then unfasten compressor and position aside.
3. Remove A/C compressor bracket to cylinder head attaching bolts and loosen bracket to block attaching bolts.
4. Disconnect upper radiator and heater hose from thermostat housing.
5. Remove valve cover as described refer to VALVE COVER.
6. To avoid damage, alternately loosen then remove two cap screws from each rocker arm bridge and pivot assembly.
7. Remove the bridges, pivots and rocker arms and place on bench in order removed.
8. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD and INTAKE MANIFOLD.
9. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.

INSTALLATION


To ease installation, fabricate two used head bolts as alignment dowels. Cut the head off one bolt and cut a slot (A) in the second bolt, Fig. 12.
1. Insert one dowel in bolt hole No. 10, the other in bolt hole No. 8. Place cylinder head gasket with numbers facing up on dowels, then install cylinder head.
2. Install remaining head bolts except No. 7. Coat threads of No. 7 with Loctite or suitable sealant, then install bolt.
3. Remove dowels and install head bolts No. 8 and 10.
4. Torque bolts in sequence to 22 ft. lbs., Fig. 13.
5. Torque bolts in sequence to 45 ft. lbs.
6. Recheck all bolts ensuring the torque is 45 ft. lbs.
7. In sequence torque all bolts except No. 7 to 110 ft. lbs. and No. 7 to 100 ft. lbs.
8. Install pushrods, rocker arms, pivots and bridges in the order removed.
9. Refer to Removal procedure to complete installation, noting the following:
a. Tighten A/C compressor mounting bracket to cylinder head and block and A/C compressor to bracket to specifications.
b. Fill cooling system to proper level.
