1. Remove distributor cap, leaving ignition coil and spark plug wires attached.
2. Scribe a mark on distributor housing in line with the tip of the rotor.
3. Scribe another mark on the distributor housing near the retaining clamp, continuing mark onto the engine block.
4. Remove distributor retaining bolt and clamp, then the distributor.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean the distributor mounting area and replace gasket in counterbore of cylinder block.
2. Position distributor in cylinder block.
3. If engine was not rotated while distributor was removed, proceed as follows:
a. Align rotor tip with scribe mark on distributor housing, then turn rotor approximately 1/8 turn counterclockwise past mark.
b. Ensure distributor shaft fully engages oil pump drive gear shaft. It may be necessary to slightly crank engine while exerting downward pressure on distributor to fully engage distributor shaft with oil pump drive gear shaft.
c. Slide distributor shaft down into engine, aligning scribed mark on housing with corresponding mark on cylinder block.
d. Install distributor hold-down clamp, then the bolt.
4. If engine was rotated while distributor was removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove No. 1 spark plug.
b. Hold a finger over No. 1 spark plug hole and rotate engine until compression is felt, then continue slowly rotating engine until timing mark on vibration damper is at TDC. Do not rotate engine backward to perform this task.
c. Using a flat screwdriver, rotate oil pump gear until gear slot on oil pump shaft is slightly past 3 o'clock position.
d. With distributor cap removed, install distributor with rotor located at 5 o'clock position.
e. Fully engage distributor into engine. At this time rotor should be at 6 o'clock position.
f. Install distributor hold-down clamp, then the bolt.
