SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Poor performance or hesitation may occur under one of two possible conditions:

1. Before engine reaches normal operating temperature.

2. After engine has reached normal operating temperature, engine is turned off and not restarted for approximately one hour.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure will aid in diagnosing and eliminating the SYMPTOM/CONDITION listed above.

A. Perform the Driveability Diagnostic Tests as outlined in the "Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures" manual for the 1.5L/1.6L/1.6L Turbo MMC engines (Publication # 81-699-9018). If no Fault Codes are displayed, perform one of the two following procedures.

B. If sag or hesitation is encountered before the engine reaches normal operating temperature, perform the following procedure:

1. Referring to the Colt/Summit Service Manual (Publication # 81-270-9011) perform the "Fuel Pressure Test" for the 1.6L engine as called out on page 14-39.
2. If fuel pressure is not within specifications (270 kPa [38 psi] with regulator vacuum hose connected or 330 to 350 kPa [47 to 50 psi] with regulator vacuum hose disconnected and plugged), replace the fuel pressure regulator (PN MD124646).

C. If sag or hesitation is encountered after the engine has reached normal operating temperature, turned off and then restarted about one hour later, perform the following procedure:

1. Referring to the Colt/Summit Service Manual (Publication # 81-270-9011), perform the "Fuel Pressure Test" for the 1.6L engine as called out on page 14-39.

2. If fuel pressure is not within specifications (see step # 2 above), replace the fuel pressure regulator (PN MD124646).

3. If the fuel pressure is within specifications, and the engine was produced prior to engine serial number GV3833, replace all 4 injectors (PN MD141263).
