Rear Axle Service

Fig. 1 Axle Shaft Bolt Torque Sequence:

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove and discard safety nuts securing brake drum to axle shaft hub.
4. Remove plastic hub cover using suitable screwdriver.
5. Remove brake drum from axle shaft hub.
6. Remove and discard axle shaft hub locknut.
7. Remove axle shaft hub from axle shaft using a suitable puller if necessary.
8. Remove axle shaft to rear axle attaching bolts.
9. Remove brake backing plate to axle shaft attaching bolt.
10. Remove axle shaft from trailing arm.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten axle shaft to rear axle attaching bolts in sequence shown, to specifications.
b. Torque brake backing plate to axle shaft attaching bolt to specifications.
c. Install and torque new axle shaft hub locknut and torque to specifications.
d. Install brake drum and new safety nuts to axle shaft hub.
