SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Headlights stay in the up position when turned off. This may be caused by a corroded connector in the headlight wiring circuit.

DIAGNOSIS

Cycle the headlight switch. If the headlights pop-up when the switch is turned on, but will not retract when the switch is turned off, the following repair procedure must be performed.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 Passing Control Relay PN MB852958
(if necessary)
1 Heat Shrink Tube PN 4419644
2 Tie Straps PN 6015756

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure involves inspection and repair of the headlight wiring.

1. Remove the windshield washer and power steering reservoirs.

2. Remove the left headlight pop-up motor.

FIGURE 1:

3. Open the corrugated tubing on the engine compartment wiring harness and pull out the wires (Figure 1).
4. Find the taped joint on the blue with a red tracer wire. Remove the black electrical tape and inspect the solder connection for corrosion.

5. If no corrosion is present, ensure the wires are tight at the crimp joint. Refer to the proper service manual for headlight wiring and motor diagnosis.

6. If corrosion is present, remove the corroded portion, install heat shrink tubing on wire and solder the two wires together (a jumper wire may be necessary) using a ROSIN CORE solder.

7. To prevent future corrosion, coat the new joint with Lubriplate Grease (PN 83506385) or equivalent. Heat the tubing to shrink it onto the wire.

8. Check other joints in this area for corrosion and correct as outlined in step 6.

9. Tape wiring and place back into corrugated tubing making sure that the slit in the tubing is facing down.

10. If vehicle was manufactured before MDH 05-18-XX, replace passing control relay with PN MB852958. Later built vehicles already have an updated passing relay.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
