Fuel Pump: Service and Repair
EARLY MODEL VEHICLESFuel Pump/sending Unit Assembly:
REMOVAL
Note: The fuel tank must be removed from the vehicle to remove the fuel pump/sending unit assembly.
1. Remove the 8 fuel pump/sending unit mounting bolts, and lift the unit out of the tank. Discard the mounting gasket.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Disconnect the fuel pump terminal wires from top of pump.
2. Unscrew fuel pump lower support bracket nut, remove the bracket, gasket and bolt.
3. Disconnect the hose clamp on the inlet end of the pump, and slide off hose.
4. Loosen remaining hose clamp and remove pump. Inspect gasket and discard if any wear or damage is evident.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install gasket on pump, push pump into outlet hose and tighten hose clamp.
2. Install lower gasket and support bracket and replace the lower bracket bolt through bracket and tighten nut securely.
3. Connect the inlet hose to the pump and tighten hose clamp.
4. Connect wires to terminals on top of pump.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the fuel pump/sending unit into the fuel tank, with a new gasket. Install and torque the mounting bolts to 2 N-m (18 lb-in).
2. Reinstall the fuel tank.
LATE MODEL VEHICLES
REMOVAL
Note: The fuel tank must be removed from the vehicle to remove the fuel pump/sending unit assembly.
1. Loosen the pump/sending unit clamp, and lift the unit out of the tank. Discard the mounting gasket.
Fuel Hose Identification:
INSTALLATION
1. Position the new gasket on the fuel pump/sending unit flange.
2. Lower the pump/sending unit into the fuel tank.
3. Rotate pump/sending unit so that the fuel and vapor tubes point to the right side of the tank when the tank is installed in the vehicle.
4. Push the pump/sending unit down to compress the spring, install the clamp and tighten.
2. Install the fuel tank.
