Front Axle Service

CAUTION: When servicing driveshafts. Do not strike the end of the shaft or drop it. Inspect C/V boots and replace if damaged or worn.
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove tire and wheel assembly, then the brake caliper. Do not disconnect brake caliper hose or suspend caliper from hose.
3. Using suitable tool to hold wheel hub in place, remove driveshaft nut.
4. Loosen driveshaft in hub. If driveshaft does not come loose by hand, use hub puller No. T.Av. 1050 or equivalent.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to loosen driveshaft by striking it with a hammer.
5. Using a punch, remove driveshaft roll pin.
6. Remove steering knuckle-to-strut attaching bolts.
CAUTION: Do not turn bolts, as they are splined just under bolt head. Hold bolt head with a suitable wrench, then unscrew nut to end of bolt. Tap nut with brass hammer to loosen bolt, then remove nut and slide bolt from knuckle.
7. Tilt steering knuckle out and away from strut, then remove driveshaft.
8. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering knuckle-to-strut attaching nuts to 123 lb-ft, and driveshaft nut to 181 lb-ft. Check and adjust transaxle fluid level if necessary.
