Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under ``Fuel System Pressure Release.''
2. Raise and support vehicle then drain cooling system and engine oil.

3. Remove cylinder head in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 26, noting the following:
a. Remove engine mount as outlined under ``Engine Mount, Replace.''

b. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the timing marks, Fig. 27.
b. Tie camshaft sprocket and timing belt with a cord so that position of camshaft sprocket will not move with respect to the timing belt.
c. Remove camshaft sprocket using spanner wrench tools No. MB990767 and MD998719 or equivalents.

d. Remove cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 28.
4. Install cylinder head in reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 26, noting the following:
a. Place cylinder head gasket on cylinder block so that ID mark is facing upward.

b. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 29, in two or three steps to specification.
