9. Exhaust Restriction
9. Exhaust Restriction
Purpose:
The purpose of this test is to determine if an exhaust system restriction is causing a performance problem.
Exhaust Restriction
^ Visually inspect the exhaust system for damage.
^ For F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On Or Before 9-29-03: Monitor the exhaust pressure using the gauge 0-1,100 kPa (0-160 psi) Bar 014-00761 or equivalent (part of DSL ENG Pressure Test Kit 014-00761 or equivalent) and the engine oil temperature greater than 80°C (176°F) at 3,800 RPM with the vehicle in PARK/NEUTRAL.
^ For E-Series or F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On 9-30-03 Or Later: Monitor the EP PID with the engine oil temperature greater than 80°C (176°F) at 3,800 RPM with the vehicle in PARK/NEUTRAL.
Recommended Procedure:
^ For F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On Or Before 9-29-03: Connect the Gauge 0- 1,100 kPa (0-160 psi) Bar 014-00761 or equivalent (part of DSL ENG Pressure Test Kit 014-00761 or equivalent). Access and monitor the RPM PID.
^ For E-Series or F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On 9-30-03 Or Later: Access and monitor the EP and RPM PIDs
^ Increase the engine speed to 3,800 RPM.
^ For F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On Or Before 9-29-03: Record the exhaust pressure gauge value. A low RPM or an exhaust pressure greater than 234 kPa (34 psi) indicates a restricted exhaust condition.
^ For E-Series or F-Super Duty/Excursion - Build Date On 9-30-03 Or Later: Record the EP PID value. A low RPM or an EP PID greater than 244 kPa (35 psi) indicates a restricted exhaust condition.
Possible Causes:
^ Collapsed or restricted tail pipe
^ Clogged catalytic converter
^ Damaged muffler
^ Turbocharger
