MIL ON WITH DTC P0657 - TRANSMISSION
OPERATING IN FMEM MODE - TORQSHIFT
FORD:
2005-2006 E-Series
ISSUE
Some 2005-2006 E-Series vehicles equipped with a 6.0L diesel engine and TorqShift transmission may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code P0657 (Actuator Supply Voltage A Circuit Open) and the transmission in failure mode effect management (FMEM: operation only in park, reverse, neutral, and 5th gear). This condition may be caused by a chafed transmission power supply wire in the 12B637 or 7C078 wire harnesses near connector C195.
ACTION
Inspect harnesses 12B637 and 7C078 near Connector C195 for a chafe on the transmission power supply wire (red with a yellow stripe) and repair as necessary. The most likely location for the chafe is on harness 12B637, just above the connector on the PCM side of C195. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the engine/transmission access cover and aluminum shield inside the vehicle.
2. Locate the C195 connector on the transmission bell housing and examine all wires for possible chafed insulation.
3. Repair the chafed wire by replacing the damaged section of wire with the same gauge wire and a new terminal, referring to TSB 05-18-7 (Soldering and Crimping Repairs) and Wiring Diagram Section 5-1 as needed.
4. After repairing the wire, ensure the new terminal is properly locked in the connector by pulling on the wire.
5. To prevent recurrence, wrap the harness with friction tape, starting on the connector and ending on the wire harness past the chafed area.
6. Clear DTCs.
