INCH WHEELS - SLOW SPEED BELOW 5 MPH (8
KM/H) - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 1/28/2009

FORD:
2008-2009 Edge

This article supersedes TSB 08-7-2 to update Service Procedure and Part List.

ISSUE
Some 2008-2009 Edge vehicles built on or before 1/28/2009 and equipped with 20 inch chrome clad cast aluminum wheels may exhibit a noise coming from the front or rear wheel(s) at speeds lower than 5 MPH (8 Km/h). The noise may be coming from the chrome cladding that attaches to the rim.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
IF THE SOURCE OF NOISE IS NOT FROM THE WHEEL, FOLLOW NORMAL WORKSHOP MANUAL PROCEDURES.

1. Verify the noise is coming from the wheel(s). The wheel noise (clicking/creaking) is worse at higher temperatures and during slow speed maneuvers.

2. Replace wheel(s) making the described noise with updated service parts for 20" chrome (bright) clad cast aluminum wheel. Refer to Workshop Manual 204-04 for wheel replacement. Proceed to Step 3.

3. For the remaining wheels not making noise remove the center caps and identify the wheel cladding manufacturer. (Figure 1 old manufacturer) and (Figure 2 new manufacturer). If the slots shown in Figure 2 are not present during the wheel inspection proceed to Step 4. If the slots shown in Figure 2 are present during the wheel inspection no further service action is required.

4. Using a feeler gauge accurate to 0.01" (0.1 mm) or smaller set to 0.05" (1.3 mm) thickness, inspect gap between plastic cladding and backbone aluminum wheel Figure 3 at 12:00 (12:00 position is in line with valve stem) and 6:00 positions. If gaps are greater than or equal to 0.05" (1.3 mm) at both 12:00 and 6:00 positions proceed to Step 5. If gap is less than 0.05" (1.3 mm) at either 12:00 or 6:00 or both positions no further service action is required.

5. Replace old manufacturer wheel(s) only having gaps greater than or equal to 0.05" (1.3 mm) at both 12:00 and 6:00 positions. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 204-04 for wheel replacement.
