Test AG: Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor

PINPOINT TEST AG: ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR

NOTE: Base idle should not be less than 0.5 volt

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- APP sensor (9F836)
- harness circuits: APP1, APP2, APP3, SIGRTN, and VREF
- powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650)

AG1 : PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS

- Carry out a visual inspection.
- Retrieve and record any continuous and on-demand diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
- Record the freeze frame data
- Clear the DTCs.
- Carry out the KOEO self-test. Quick Test Description
- Are any DTCs retrieved?

AG2 : DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2122, P2127, AND P2132

- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Apply and release the accelerator pedal
- Do all signal values change when the accelerator is applied and released?

AG3 : CHECK THE VREF SENSOR CIRCUITS

- Ignition OFF.
- APP Sensor connector disconnected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between:







- Are the voltages between 4.5 - 5.5 volts?

AG4 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR OPERATION

- Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:







- Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Are the voltages between 4.5 V - 5.5 V?

AG5 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- PCM connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:







- Are the resistances less than 5 Ohm?

AG6 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Measure the resistance between:







- Are the resistances greater than 10 kOhm?

AG7 : DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2123, P2128, AND P2133

- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Apply and release the accelerator pedal
- Do all the signal values change when the accelerator is applied and released?

AG8 : SIMULATE THE OPPOSITE SIGNAL

NOTE: The APP sensor is disconnected to simulate the opposite DTC.

- Ignition OFF.
- APP Sensor connector disconnected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Do all PID signal values read 0 volts?

AG9 : CHECK THE APP SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- PCM connector disconnected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between:







- Are the voltages less than 0.2 V?

AG10 : CHECK THE APP SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between:







- Are the resistances greater than 10 kOhm?

AG11 : CHECK THE APP SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

- Measure the resistance between:







- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

AG12 : DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2138, P2139, AND P2140

- Clear the DTCs.
- Carry out the KOEO and KOER self-test. Quick Test Description
- Are DTCs P2138, P2139 or P2140 present?

AG13 : CHECK THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY FOR BINDING

- Apply the accelerator pedal slowly to the floor and release
- Does the accelerator pedal move to the floor and return without binding?

AG14 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL VOLTAGE RANGES

- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Apply the accelerator pedal slowly to the floor and release







- Are the PID voltage values within the range specified in the table?

AG15 : DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P2104

- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 PID.
- Access the PCM and monitor the APP3 PID.
- Slowly apply and release the accelerator pedal while observing the PID voltage values







- Are the PID voltage values within the range specified in the table?

AG16 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR

- Ignition OFF.
- APP Sensor connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:







- Is the resistance between 2.7 kOhm - 6.5 kOhm?

AG17 : CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUITS

- PCM connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:







- Is the resistance greater than 10 kOhm?






----------------------------------------------
AG18 : CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION

- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Visually inspect for:
- pushed out pins
- corrosion

- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
