Test AI: Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch
PINPOINT TEST AI: BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCHFlow Chart:
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- brake pedal position (BPP) switch
- harness circuits BPP and B+
- powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650)

AI1 : DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1703
NOTE: DTC P1703 indicates that during the key on engine running (KOER) self-test, the BPP signal did not cycle.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF
- Access the PCM and monitor the BPP_BOO PID.
- Does the BPP PID indicate ON?
-----------------------------------------------
AI2 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- BPP Switch connector disconnected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the BPP_BOO PID.
- Does the BPP PID indicate ON?
-----------------------------------------------
AI3 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- PCM connector disconnected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between:
- Is any voltage indicated?
-----------------------------------------------
AI4 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH OPERATION
- Access the PCM and monitor the BPP_BOO PID.
- Apply and release the brake pedal
- Does the BPP PID state change when the brake pedal is fully applied and released?
-----------------------------------------------
AI5 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- BPP Switch connector disconnected.
- Measure the voltage between:
- Is the voltage greater than 10 V?
-----------------------------------------------
AI6 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH SIGNAL
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the PCM and monitor the BPP_BOO PID.
- Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
- Does the BPP PID indicate ON?
-----------------------------------------------
AI7 : CHECK THE BPP SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- PCM connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:
- Is the resistance less than 5 Ohm?
-----------------------------------------------
AI8 : CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Visually inspect for:
- pushed out pins
- corrosion
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
