ISSUE
Some 2009 Escape and Mariner vehicles built prior to 4/22/2009 and equipped with a 3.0L engine, may exhibit intermittent right hand (RH) cylinder head upper end knocking or thumping type noise. The noise is heard as the vehicle comes to a stop after the engine is hot. For example, coming to a stop at the end of highway exit ramp. Noise will continue 45-60 seconds and then diminish. Noise will occur again once engine is hot and vehicle comes to another stop.
ACTION
Follow the Service procedure steps to diagnose and correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Reproduce noise by driving vehicle till engine is hot, then come to stop.
2. Confirm issue by isolating the noise using chassis ears or stethoscope on the RH cylinder head by the variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid connector. If the vehicle has this issue, there will also be a vibration that can be felt at the VCT solenoid connector.
3. If the vehicle exhibits the RH cylinder head 0.5 order cam thump noise as described, replace the RH cylinder head by following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01B.
