Interior - Rattle Or Scratching Noise From The Headliner Area

RATTLE OR SCRATCHING NOISE IN HEADLINER AREA

2009-2013 Flex
The article supersedes TSB 11-11-25 to remove the production fix date, update the vehicle model years and Service Procedure.
ISSUE
Some 2009-2013 Flex vehicles may exhibit a rattle or repeated scratching noise in the headliner area while driving.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. If the noise concern is coming from the roof area, lightly tap or push up on the headliner in the concern area to duplicate the noise.
a. If the noise can be duplicated and has been identified as a noise above the headliner proceed to Step 2.
b. If the noise cannot be identified as coming from the headliner, do not continue with this article. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-00 for normal diagnostics.
2. Remove the A-pillar, B-pillar, C-pillar and D-pillar trim panels. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.
3. Remove the sun visors retainer screws, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sun visors.
4. Open the assist handle screw covers.
5. Remove the assist handle screws and remove the assist handles.
a. If equipped, disconnect the assist handle lamp electrical connector.
6. Lower headliner as needed.
7. Locate loose component(s) inside headliner where adhesive has delaminated from the headliner.
8. Remove dried glue from this area by using a scraper and pulling the dried glue bead up and off of the headliner.
a. A thin layer of headliner backing material attached on the removed glue bead is acceptable.
9. Apply 3M(TM) Duramix(TM) Super Fast Adhesive to the entire mating surface of the component(s) which have come loose.
10. Attach loose component(s) to headliner.
11. Allow 10 minutes for glue to set. Before proceeding, verify that the component(s) are no longer loose from the headliner.
12. Raise the headliner back into position.
a. If equipped, connect the assist handle lamp electrical connector.
13. Install assist handle with screws and close the assist handle screw covers.
14. Install the sun visor using retainer screws and connect the electrical connector.
15. Install the A-pillar, B-pillar, C-pillar and D-pillar trim panels. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.
