Pinpoint Test J: The Engine Does Not Start/Unable To Transition The Ignition Out Of OFF
Normal Operation
During each vehicle start sequence, when the start/stop switch is pressed, the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) activates all 3 passive start antennas, which send out a low frequency signal. If an Intelligent Access (IA) key is within range of a passive start antenna, the low frequency signal activates the IA (Intelligent Access) key. When the IA (Intelligent Access) key is activated it sends a high frequency signal to the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) module. The TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module communicates with the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module. If the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module determines that a programmed IA (Intelligent Access) key is in the vehicle, it allows the ignition to transition out of off or lets the engine start.
If the vehicle has a failure of any passive start antenna, the battery in the IA (Intelligent Access) key, or the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module, the vehicle can experience a Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) no-start. However, in the event of one of these failures, the IA (Intelligent Access) key can be placed in the backup slot (located in the center console) to allow the vehicle to start. The backup transceiver is located next to the backup slot and activates an IA (Intelligent Access) key if it is placed in the slot. The backup transceiver is hardwired to the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module and when it is activated, sends out a low frequency signal. If a programmed IA (Intelligent Access) key is in the backup slot when the backup transceiver is activated, it activates the IA (Intelligent Access) key and the identification code is sent back to the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module through the backup transceiver.
Once the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module determines that a programmed IA (Intelligent Access) key is inside the vehicle and receives a request to start the engine, it communicates with the Body Control Module (BCM) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Once the BCM (Body Control Module) receives the command from the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module, it communicates with the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). Once the BCM (Body Control Module) initializes and communicates with the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module and the PCM, it checks the ID of each module and compares it with the module ID stored in its own memory. If the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module and PCM IDs match the IDs stored in the BCM (Body Control Module), then PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) enables the starter relay and fuel injectors and allows the engine to start.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Starting system concern
- Driveability concern
- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) concern
PINPOINT TEST J : THE ENGINE DOES NOT START/UNABLE TO TRANSITION THE IGNITION OUT OF OFF
NOTE: The IA (Intelligent Access) feature is a programmable parameter and can be enabled/disabled with a scan tool. If the feature is disabled, the Intelligent Access (IA) feature to enter the vehicle and passive starting will be inoperative. To start the vehicle, the IA (Intelligent Access) key has to be placed in the backup slot. for information on enabling/disabling the IA (Intelligent Access) feature.
J1 CHECK FOR ANY MESSAGES IN THE MESSAGE CENTER
- Check the message center while pressing the start/stop switch.
Is NO KEY DETECTED displayed in the message center?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test K. Pinpoint Test K: NO KEY DETECTED Is Displayed In The Message Center
No
GO to J2.
J2 CHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION
- Observe the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) operation while pressing the start/stop switch.
Do some of the indicators in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) illuminate?
Yes
GO to J3.
No
GO to J4.
J3 CHECK FOR RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE AND BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs
- Retrieve the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module and BCM (Body Control Module) continuous and on-demand DTCs.
Are any RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module or BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs present?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts With Intelligent Access (IA).
No
The no-start condition is not PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) -related. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information to diagnose the cause of the no-start condition.
J4 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCAN TOOL
- Refer to Inspection and Verification in Information Bus, and follow the procedure to establish a session with the vehicle Inspection and Verification.
Does the scan tool establish communication with the BCM (Body Control Module) and the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module?
Yes
REFER to Steering Column to diagnose no power in RUN.
No
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose the module that is not communicating with the scan tool.
