2010-2011 MKX
ISSUE
Some 2010-2011 Edge and MKX vehicles built on or between 7/12/2010 and 12/22/2010 may exhibit a wind whistle noise from the left hand (LH) side exterior mirror while driving at speeds over 64 Km/h (40 MPH).
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the LH side exterior mirror from the vehicle. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-09.
2. Carefully remove the mirror mounting base gasket from the mirror housing.
3. Locate the small access cover under the mirror neck. (Figure 1)
4. Carefully place a flat blade screw driver under the wire harness through the routing path in the inner base as shown below. (Figure 2)
5. Carefully pry up on the screw driver, thus pushing down on the access cover, causing the access cover to pop off. (Figure 3)
6. Using a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water clean the non-textured side of the access cover.
7. From the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (part number 164-R4900) select one PCV soft foam tape strip (part number 164-R4901).
a. Cut the foam tape strip to a size 10 mm (3/8") wide x 50 mm (1 31/32") long and apply it to the non-textured side of the access cover. (Figure 4)
b. Make sure the foam tape overlaps the edge of the access cover at least 5 mm (3/16"). (Figure 5)
c. The overlap ensures the gap between the access cover and mirror housing is sealed when the cover is installed.
8. Reinstall the access cover.
a. The cover should sit slightly recessed to the mirror housing when fully installed. The added foam tape should not be visible and should overlap the gap between the cover and housing when installed.
9. Reinstall the mirror mounting base gasket to the mirror housing.
10. Install the LH mirror assembly. Refer WSM, Section 501-09.
