Diagnostic Overview
No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 14, Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
REFER to High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Module Communications Network.
REFER to Controller Area Network (CAN) Fault Tolerance Module Communications Network.
Pinpoint Test
1. CHECK THE DLC (Data Link Connector) PINS FOR DAMAGE
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect the scan tool cable from the DLC (Data Link Connector).
3. Inspect the DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 for damage.
Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 OK?
2. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE
1. Measure:
Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
3. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Measure:
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
4. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
1. Connect the negative battery cable.
2. Ignition ON.
3. Measure:
Are the voltages greater than 6 volts?
5. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR
1. Measure:
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
6. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR WITH THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175B.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
7. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
8. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE BCM (Body Control Module) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
9. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
1. Measure:
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
10. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
11. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
1. Measure:
2. Disconnect the following modules one at a time until the resistance is greater than 5 ohms.
- APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) (if equipped)
- ATCM (All Terrain Control Module)
- ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module
- BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F
- C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) (if equipped)
- FLM (Front Lighting Control Module)
- HUD (Head Up Display) module (if equipped)
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
- OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module)
- PAM (Parking Aid Module) (if equipped)
- PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) C1463A
- PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175B
- RCM (Restraints Control Module) C310B
- SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) C2414A
Did the resistance change to greater than 5 ohms with one of the modules disconnected?
12. CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE MODULES DISCONNECTED
1. Measure:
2. Disconnect the following modules one at a time until the resistance to ground is greater than 1000 ohms.
- APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) (if equipped)
- ATCM (All Terrain Control Module)
- ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module
- BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F
- C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) (if equipped)
- FLM (Front Lighting Control Module)
- HUD (Head Up Display) module (if equipped)
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
- OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module)
- PAM (Parking Aid Module) (if equipped)
- PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) C1463A
- PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175B
- RCM (Restraints Control Module) C310B
- SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) C2414A
Did the resistance change to greater than 1,000 ohms with one of the modules disconnected?
13. CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: Establish an IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) session prior to disabling the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) in this test step. If the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) has failed communication during multiple attempts to identify the vehicle, first identify the vehicle manually by entering a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) part number, calibration number or tear tag when prompted by IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System).When a vehicle is manually identified by a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) part number, calibration number or tear tag, the IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) does not automatically run a network test. Manually select and run the network test.
When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuses 69 (15A), 86 (7.5A) and 90 (10A).
2. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
14. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuses 43 (40A) and 92 (10A).
2. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
15. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCCM (Steering Column Control Module), ATCM (All Terrain Control Module), FLM (Front Lighting Control Module) AND THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuse 23 (15A) and 35 (5A).
2. Ignition OFF.
3. Disconnect: SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) C2414B.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
Do all other HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test?
16. CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCCM (Steering Column Control Module), ATCM (All Terrain Control Module), FLM (Front Lighting Control Module) AND THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect modules one at a time until other HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
2. Disconnect: SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) C2414A.
3. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
4. Disconnect: FLM (Front Lighting Control Module).
5. Repeat the network test.
6. Disconnect: ATCM (All Terrain Control Module) (if equipped).
7. Repeat the network test.
8. Disconnect: HUD (Head Up Display) module (if equipped).
9. Repeat the network test.
Do all other HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test?
17. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuses 79 (5A) and 91 (10A).
2. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
18. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RCM (Restraints Control Module), OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module), PAM (Parking Aid Module), AND THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disable modules one at a time until other HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
2. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 37 (10A) to disable the RCM (Restraints Control Module).
3. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
4. Install the removed fuse.
5. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 33 (10A) to disable the OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module).
6. Repeat the network test.
7. Install the removed fuse.
8. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 29 (20A) to disable the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) (if equipped).
9. Repeat the network test.
10. Install the removed fuse.
11. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 34 (10A) to disable the PAM (Parking Aid Module) (if equipped).
12. Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
19. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE BCM (Body Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 18 (10A).
2. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
3. Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
20. CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) AND PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the network test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
1. Disable modules one at a time until other HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
2. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 11 (10A) to disable the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).
3. Using a scan tool, perform network test.
4. Install the removed fuse.
5. Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuses 89 (5A) to disable the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module).
6. Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
21. CHECK THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
22. CHECK THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
23. CHECK THE BCM (Body Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
24. CHECK THE C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
25. CHECK THE FLM (Front Lighting Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the FLM (Front Lighting Control Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the FLM (Front Lighting Control Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
26. CHECK THE PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
27. CHECK THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the HUD (Head Up Display) module connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the HUD (Head Up Display) module connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
28. CHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
29. CHECK THE OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
30. CHECK THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
31. CHECK THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
32. CHECK THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the RCM (Restraints Control Module) connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the RCM (Restraints Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
33. CHECK THE SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
34. CHECK THE ATCM (All Terrain Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the ATCM (All Terrain Control Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the ATCM (All Terrain Control Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
