Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW

Some of the affected vehicles may not conform to the requirements specified by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No.207 S4.2 Seating Systems - General Performance Requirements. Dealers are to replace the second row 60% seat inboard recliner.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Removal

1. NOTE: Returning the seat from the E-Z entry position to the load floor position will latch the inboard latch foot. The inboard latch foot must latch before the seat backrest will return to the upright position. Returning the seat backrest to the upright position will latch the outboard latch foot.

Using the recliner handle, fold the affected seat forward to the E-Z entry position.

2. If equipped, disconnect the seat electrical connector(s).

3. Remove and discard the 2 riser/seat track-to-floor pan bolts and 2 riser/seat track-to-floor pan nuts.

4. Remove the 2nd row 60 percent seat from the vehicle.

Disassembly





5. From under the seat, release the cushion trim cover J-clips. See Figure 1.





6. Pull the cushion cover outboard retainer out from between the cushion frame and riser. See Figure 2.





7. Release the two seat cushion trim cover retainers from the rear of the seat cushion frame. See Figure 3.

RH shown, LH similar

8. Remove the seat cushion assembly from the seat cushion frame.





9. Remove the RH riser covers. See Figure 4.

1. Remove the 2 RH inner riser cover screws.

2. Release the clips, separate and remove the RH inner riser cover from the RH outer riser cover.

3. Remove the 3 screws and the RH outer riser cover.





10. Using a suitable cutting tool, cut the zip tie that retains the seat recliner cables to the seat cushion frame. See Figure 5.

11. Remove the safety belt buckle and safety belt anchor assembly-to-inboard recliner bolt. Remove the safety belt anchor bracket from the seat frame.

12. Position the seat in the upright position with the seat backrest in the folded position.

13. Release the 2 seat backrest cover J-clips at the bottom of the seat backrest. Fold the seat backrest cover back.

14. Release the seat backrest cover inner J-clips and push pins. See Figure 6.





15. Release the seat backrest cover hook-and-loop strips. See Figure 6. For vehicles not equipped with armrest, proceed to step 22.

NOTE:
Non-armrest equipped seat shown. Armrest equipped seat is similar.

Armrest Equipped Seat

16. Remove the center seat headrest.





17. Lift up on the inboard side of the seat backrest trim cover to disengage the backrest trim cover retainers See Figure 7.





18. Remove the 3 armrest screws. See Figure 8.

19. Remove the 3 armrest bolts. See Figure 8.

20. Using a suitable tool, release the 2 armrest retaining clips from the seat backrest. See Figure 8.

21. Remove the armrest from the seat backrest.

All Vehicles

22. NOTE: To bring the seat backrest upright, first close the inboard floor latch. Extend the seat backrest to the upright position.





23. Remove the inboard recliner right side cover. See Figure 9.

24. Remove the push pin and screw from the inboard recliner left side cover. See Figure 9.





25. Remove the inboard recliner left side cover from the recliner and slide backwards through the back of the seat. See Figure 10.





26. Using a suitable tool, release the recliner handle clip and remove the recliner handle. See Figure 11.

27. Remove the outboard recliner cover. See Figure 11.





28. Pull the seat backrest trim cover back and loosen, but do not remove, the 2 outboard seat recliner-to-seat backrest bolts. See Figure 12.

WARNING:
The inboard seat recliner is spring-loaded and can release unintentionally with significant speed/force. Keep hands clear of the seat inboard recliner-to-seat backrest arm at all times, while working with or around the recliner. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

29. Detach the inboard-to-outboard recliner cable from the outboard seat recliner. See Figure 12.





30. Detach the outboard-to-inboard recliner cable from the inboard seat recliner. See Figure 13.





31. Remove the 2 inboard seat recliner-to-seat backrest Torx(R) bolts. See Figure 14.

32. Remove the 3 inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame bolts and the inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame yoke bolt. See Figure 14.

33. NOTE: Note the routing of the recliner cables for installation. Remove the inboard seat recliner from the seat assembly.

34. With the inboard seat recliner-to-seat backrest arm facing upward, place the inboard seat recliner securely in a vice.

WARNING: The inboard seat recliner is spring-loaded and can release unintentionally with significant speed/force. Keep hands clear of the seat inboard recliner-to-seat backrest arm at all times, while working with or around the recliner. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

35. Using the outboard recliner cable end, release the inboard recliner. Discard the affected recliner.

Assembly

WARNING:
Do not remove the zip tie from the new inboard seat recliner at this time. Failure to follow these instructions may result in unintentional release of the recliner arm, which may result in serious personal injury.





36. Install the new inboard seat recliner onto the seat assembly. Route the inboard-to-outboard seat recliner cable to the outboard seat recliner. See Figure 15.

37. NOTE: The 3 inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame bolts have self tapping threads.

Install the 3 inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame bolts and the inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame yoke bolt. Do not tighten at this time. See Figure 14.

38. NOTE: This retainer is self tapping. Drive torque may exceed the final torque.

NOTE:
After tightening, verify bolt is fully secured and that the safety belt anchor bracket does not move.

Install the safety belt anchor bracket to the inboard seat recliner. Install the safety belt buckle and safety belt anchor assembly-to-inboard recliner bolt.

^ Tighten the safety belt anchor assembly-to-inboard recliner bolt, until the safety belt anchor bracket is secure to the inboard seat recliner. A final torque will be performed in the following steps.

39. Install the 2 inboard seat recliner-to-seat backrest Torx� bolts. Do not tighten at this time. See Figure 14.

40. Tighten the 3 inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame bolts and the inboard seat recliner-to-seat cushion frame yoke bolt in the sequence shown. See Figure 16.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

41. Tighten the 2 inboard seat recliner-to-seat backrest Torx(R) bolts in the sequence shown. See Figure 16.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

42. Tighten the safety belt anchor assembly-to-inboard recliner bolt. Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

WARNING:
The seat recliner is spring-loaded and can release unintentionally with significant speed/force. Keep hands clear of the seat recliner-to-seat backrest arm at all times, while working with or around the recliner. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

43. Attach the inboard-to-outboard recliner cable to the outboard recliner. See Figure 12.

44. Attach the outboard-to-inboard recliner cable to the inboard recliner. See Figure 13.

45. Cut the zip tie that is on the new inboard recliner. See Figure 15.

46. Tighten the 2 outboard recliner-to-seat backrest bolts. See Figure 12.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

47. NOTE: The outboard recliner cover hooks over the tabs on the recliner, then snaps in place. Install the outboard recliner cover and the outboard recliner handle.

48. Install the inboard recliner covers. See Figure 9.

1. Install the inboard recliner right side and left side covers to the inboard seat recliner. Snap the inboard recliner right side and left side covers together.

2. Install the push pin and screw to the inboard recliner left side cover.

Armrest Equipped Seat

49. Install the armrest to the seat backrest. Engage the 2 armrest retaining clips to the seat backrest. See Figure 8.

50. Install the 3 armrest bolts. See Figure 8.

^ Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).

51. Install the 3 armrest screws. See Figure 8.

^ Do not over-tighten.

52. Engage the backrest trim cover retainers. See Figure 7.

53. Install the center seat headrest.

All Vehicles

54. Using the recliner handle, fold the seat backrest down to the fold flat position.

55. Attach the seat backrest cover inner J-clips and push pins. See Figure 6.

56. Attach the seat backrest cover hook-and-loop strips. See Figure 6.

57. Attach the 2 seat backrest cover J-clips at the bottom of the seat backrest.

58. Reposition the seat with the backrest laying flat on the bench.

59. Bundle the recliner cables together and secure to the cushion frame wire, install a new zip tie. See Figure 5.

60. Install the RH riser covers. See Figure 4.

1. Install the RH outer riser cover and install the 3 screws.

2. Attach the RH inner riser cover to the RH outer riser cover.

3. Install the 2 RH inner riser cover screws.

61. Install the seat cushion assembly to the seat cushion frame.

62. Attach the two seat cushion trim cover retainers to the rear of the seat cushion frame. See Figure 3.

63. Attach the seat cushion trim cover retainer to the outboard side of the cushion frame. See Figure 2.

64. From under the seat, attach the cushion trim cover J-clips. See Figure 1.

Installation

65. NOTE: If the the seat-to-floor latch feet are in the closed position, use the recliner handle to open the seat-to-floor latch feet.





Prior to installing the seat into the vehicle, verity that the seat-to-floor latch feet are in the open position. See Figure 17.

66. Install the 2nd row 60 percent seat into the vehicle.

67. Install the new 60 percent seat bolts and nuts in the following sequence. See Figure 18.

1. Install the seat-to-floor rear inboard nut.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

2. Install the seat-to-floor rear outboard nut.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

3. Install the seat-to-floor front outboard bolt.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

4. Install the seat-to-floor front inboard bolt.

^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

68. If equipped, connect the seat electrical connector(s).

69. Latch the seat to the floor and move the backrest to the upright position. Verify proper seat function by folding the seat to the E-Z entry position. Re-latch the seat to the floor and return the seat backrest to the upright position.
