Pinpoint Test E: The Low Wiper Speed Does Not Operate Correctly - Front
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
Under normal operation, the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) receives open and ground inputs from the wiper/washer switch through circuits 91S-KA11 (BK/RD), 31-KA8 (BK), 8-KA47 (WH/GN), 8-KA46 (WH/BU) and 8-KA45 (WH/RD) to activate the wipers to the appropriate modes. Mode of operation is dependent on the signal(s) received from the wiper/washer switch. The front wiper relay is only active in LOW speed and MIST. When LOW or MIST is selected on the wiper/washer switch, ground is supplied to the front wiper relay through circuit 31S-KA12 (BK/WH), which activates the front wiper relay. When the front wiper relay is activated, voltage is supplied directly to the low speed windshield wiper motor input. In intermittent and high-speed mode (front wiper relay is inactive), the GEM supplies voltage to the windshield wiper motor through circuit 32-KA9 (WH/BU)/32-KA10 (WH/GN) (low-speed feed) and 32-KA11 (WH/BK) (high-speed feed).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Front wiper relay
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Multifunction switch
- Windshield wiper motor
PINPOINT TEST E: THE LOW WIPER SPEED DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY - FRONT
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
E1 CHECK FRONT WIPER POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Front Wiper Relay .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between front wiper relay socket pin 2, circuit 31-KA12 (BK), and ground; and between front wiper relay socket pin 5, circuit 15-KA1 (GN/BU) and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to E2.
No
VERIFY the Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 146 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number
-------------------------------------------------
E2 CHECK FRONT WIPER RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT
- Ignition OFF.
- Activate the wiper/washer switch to the LOW position.
- With the wiper/washer switch in the LOW-speed position, measure the resistance between front wiper relay socket pin 1, circuit 31S-KA12 (BK/WH) and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to E4.
No
GO to E3.
-------------------------------------------------
E3 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
- Disconnect: Wiper/Washer Switch C2081 .
- Carry out the Wiper/Washer Switch Component Test.
Refer to Wiper Switch for component testing.
- Did the wiper/washer switch pass the component test?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 31S-KA12 (BK/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to Steering Column Switches Steering Column Multifunction Switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E4 CHECK THE FRONT WIPER RELAY
- Ignition OFF.
- Carry out the front wiper relay component test.
Refer to Wiper Relay for component testing.
- Did the front wiper relay pass the component test?
Yes
GO to E5.
No
INSTALL a new front wiper relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E5 CHECK CIRCUIT 32-KA10 (WH/GN) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 .
- Measure the resistance between front wiper relay socket pin 3, circuit 32-KA10 (WH/GN) and windshield wiper motor C125-5, circuit 32-KA10 (WH/GN), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to Wiper Motor - Windshield Wiper Motor - Windshield. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
