Information And Message Center

Information And Message Center

The message center is a fixed format display integrated into the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The message center functions are controlled by the message center switches. The message center displays important vehicle information by constantly monitoring different vehicle systems. The message center informs the driver of vehicle operations and notifies the driver of potential vehicle problems by displaying a warning message pertaining to the system in which a fault has been detected.

The message center provides the following features:

- Information displays

- Setup displays

- System check messages

- System warning messages

Oil Change Minder

The message center provides an oil change minder to inform the driver that an oil change is required. The duration of the interval between oil changes is calculated in the PCM and varies due to driving conditions. The PCM assumes a base mileage of 16,093 km (10,000 miles) or 1 year for normal driving. However, this number is adjusted down for conditions such as high engine temperature, high engine rpm, use of flex fuel and possibly low oil level. The PCM calculates and provides an oil life status message to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) further converts the remaining oil life using the driver's configured oil life start value and displays the oil life percentage, indicating the remaining oil life. The oil change minder can be reset at any time by the driver.

Compass Display

The message center provides a compass display in the message center display using directional information sent from the compass module integrated into the interior auto-dimming mirror (without SYNC(R)) or from the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (with SYNC(R)). For additional information on the compass with SYNC(R), refer to Accessories and Optional Equipment.

Message Center Indicators

The message center displays message center indicators in the center of the message center display area at the bottom of the screen (base IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)) or in the lower LH display screen in the center of the message center at the bottom of the screen (optional IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)). Message center indicators replace indicators that have typically been displayed in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) using the same iconic representation (for example the low oil pressure message center warning indicator is represented by the oil can symbol that has been traditionally used as the low oil pressure warning indicator in other IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) configurations). Message center indicators are generally displayed along with warning messages in the message center display area of the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

Message Center Configuration

The message center is capable of configuring items such as units (English or metric), autolamp delay, to enable/disable a variety of options such as autolock, auto-unlock and easy entry/exit (if equipped) and to carry out calibrations/settings on items such as the compass.

On configurable items such as autolock, auto-unlock or easy entry/easy exit, the message center indicates the appropriate selection (ON/OFF) by providing a check mark (base IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)) or by filling in the button (optional IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)) for the desired selection.

System Warning Messages

The system warning messages alert the operator to possible problems or malfunctions in the vehicle operating systems. System warning messages may be stand-alone messages but are often associated with another form of indication such as a gauge, an indicator or message center indicator. The message center displays the last selected feature if there are no additional warning messages. Once a warning message has been displayed, the message must be acknowledged to allow full functionality of the message center. Press the OK button to acknowledge and clear the warning message.
