Pinpoint Test AJ: The SHIFT TO PARK Message Is Inoperative/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) displays SHIFT TO PARK when the vehicle is turned off with the shifter out of the PARK (P) position on vehicles with Intelligent Access (IA). The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) provides a reference voltage to the park detect switch through the park detect signal, or input circuit. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) provides the transaxle park status to the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN).

When the selector lever is out of the PARK (P) position, the park detect switch remains open to ground leaving the reference voltage high to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sends a park status message to the BCM (Body Control Module), indicating that the selector lever is not in PARK (P). The BCM (Body Control Module) monitors the ignition state and when the ignition is OFF with the selector lever out of PARK (P), the BCM (Body Control Module) sends the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) a shift to park message request.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- PRNDL display concern

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Park detect switch (part of the selector lever)

- BCM (Body Control Module)

PINPOINT TEST AJ : THE SHIFT TO PARK MESSAGE IS INOPERATIVE/ALWAYS ON

AJ1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION

- Close all doors, hood and liftgate.

- Ignition ON.

- Open the driver door while monitoring the message center displays.

Does the message center display DRIVER DOOR AJAR?

Yes
GO to AJ2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

AJ2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Is DTC U0140:00 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AU Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0140:00.

No
GO to AJ3.

AJ3 CHECK THE PRNDL PARK (P) OPERATION

- Apply the parking brake.

- Ignition ON.

- Shift the vehicle in and out of PARK (P) while monitoring the PRNDL P indication.

Does the PRNDL display P with the shifter in PARK (P) and turn off when the shifter is out of PARK (P)?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test V Pinpoint Test V: The PRNDL Indicator Is Never On/Always Displays P.

No
INSTALL a new BCM (Body Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
