Pinpoint Test AC: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 14, Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation
The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable and provides the network connection to all modules on the network.
The termination modules for the MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) are the BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) and the HVAC module.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Data Link Connector (DLC)
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Body Control Module (BCM)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)
- Heated Steering Wheel Module (HSWM) (if equipped)
- HVAC module
- Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM) (if equipped)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)
- Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) module
AC17 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module), TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) MODULE, AND THE HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the Network Test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run Network Test results.
- Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuse 23 (30A) and BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 6 (5A), 7 (7.5A) and 36 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. If the vehicle is not equipped with memory seats or heated steering wheel GO to Pinpoint Test X Pinpoint Test X: The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
If the vehicle is equipped with memory seats or heated steering wheel GO to AC18.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module, INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AC19.
If the vehicle is not equipped with RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module, INSTALL the removed fuses.
The MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) tests within specification. VERIFY the correct operation of the scan tool on a known good vehicle.
AC18 CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module), TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) MODULE, AND THE HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the Network Test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run Network Test results.
- Disconnect modules one at a time until other MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C3299D (if equipped).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Disconnect: TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module C2406.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Disconnect: HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) C2406 (if equipped).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
Do all other MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT all modules.
For restored operation with the DSM (Driver Seat Module) disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test O Pinpoint Test O: The Driver Seat Module (DSM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
For restored operation with the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test X Pinpoint Test X: The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
For restored operation with the HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test AA Pinpoint Test AA: The Heated Steering Wheel Module (HSWM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
No
CONNECT all modules. The MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) tests within specification. VERIFY the correct operation of the scan tool on a known good vehicle.
AC19 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, close the Network Test application first or the screen display reverts back to the prior run Network Test results.
- Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) Fuses 27 (20A) and 23 (15A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test Z Pinpoint Test Z: The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. The MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) tests within specification. VERIFY the correct operation of the scan tool on a known good vehicle.
AC20 CHECK THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules.
REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC21 CHECK THE BCM (Body Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new BCM (Body Control Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC22 CHECK THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the DSM (Driver Seat Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the DSM (Driver Seat Module) connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new DSM (Driver Seat Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC23 CHECK THE DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules.
REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC24 CHECK THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new GPSM (Global Positioning System Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules.
REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC25 CHECK THE HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new HSWM (Heated Steering Wheel Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC26 CHECK THE HVAC MODULE FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the HVAC module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the HVAC module connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new HVAC module. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC27 CHECK THE LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC28 CHECK THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect all the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new RFA (Remote Function Actuator). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC29 CHECK THE SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC30 CHECK THE SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right). CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
AC31 CHECK THE TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) MODULE FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Disconnect the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) module. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CONNECT all modules. REPEAT the Network Test with the scan tool.
