Pinpoint Test P: Poor Quality/Distorted Audio-Video/No Sound While in Family Entertainment Mode - All Other Functions Operate Correctly

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Set 130, Audio System/Navigation for schematic and connector information. Electrical Diagrams

Normal Operation

Each DVD player sends audio signals to the Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) through a dedicated set of circuits. The RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) then sends the audio signals to the Audio Control Module (ACM). The RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) audio output also contains SYNC(R) system audio if the vehicle is equipped with the SYNC(R) system.

In single-play mode, audio from the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) is broadcast through all vehicle speakers when family entertainment mode is selected. In dual-play mode, the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) mutes the audio output to the rear speakers so that separate audio can be played on the front speakers, while the headphones continue to broadcast the audio from the family entertainment system.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- DVD player

- RETM (Rear Entertainment Module)

- RETM (Rear Entertainment Module)

PINPOINT TEST P : POOR QUALITY/DISTORTED AUDIO-VIDEO/NO SOUND WHILE IN FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT MODE - ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS OPERATE CORRECTLY

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.

P1 DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC CONCERN

- Operate the audio system in single-play family entertainment mode.

- Insert a known good DVD into the LH DVD player and select "LH" as the source using the Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) or Front Display Interface Module (FDIM).

- Observe the family entertainment system audio output.

- Insert the known good DVD into the RH DVD player and select "RH" as the source using the FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) or FDIM (Front Display Interface Module).

- Observe the family entertainment system audio output.

Is the family entertainment audio inoperative for both DVD players?

Yes
GO to P5.

No
GO to P2.

P2 ISOLATE THE DVD PLAYER

- Ignition OFF.

- Remove both DVD players and install the suspect DVD player on the opposite headrest. Refer to Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Player .

- Operate the audio system in single-play family entertainment mode.

- Using a known good DVD, check the audio output for the suspect DVD player.

Is the family entertainment system audio inoperative with the suspect DVD player in the opposite headrest?

Yes
INSTALL a new DVD player for the suspect DVD player. REFER to Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Player . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to P3.

P3 CHECK THE DVD PLAYER AUDIO OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) C2949A.

- Disconnect: LH DVD Player C3370A and C3370B (LH Concern).

- Disconnect: RH DVD Player C3371A and C3371B (RH Concern).

- Ignition ON.

- Measure the voltage between the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module), harness side and ground as follows:

Suspect DVD Player Positive Meter Lead Negative Meter Lead LH C2949A-16 VMR02 (GY/YE) Ground C2949A-14 VMR06 (BN/GN) Ground C2949A-4 VMR03 (VT/BN) Ground C2949A-2 VMR07 (BU/GY) Ground RH C2949A-17 VMR16 (GY/BN) Ground C2949A-15 VMR20 (BN/WH) Ground C2949A-5 VMR17 (VT/GN) Ground C2949A-3 VMR21 (BU/BN) Ground

Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to P4.

P4 CHECK THE DVD AUDIO OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.

- Measure the resistance between the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module), harness side and the DVD player, harness side; and between the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module), harness side and ground as follows:

Suspect DVD Player Positive Meter Lead Negative Meter Lead Circuit LH C2949A-16 C3370A-5, then ground VMR02 (GY/YE or WH) C2949A-14 C3370B-4, then ground VMR06 (BN/GN or WH) C2949A-4 C3370A-4, then ground VMR03 (VT/BN or RD) C2949A-2 C3370B-3, then ground VMR07 (BU/GY or RD) C2949A-19 Ground DMR14 C2949A-18 Ground DMR06 RH C2949A-17 C3371A-5, then ground VMR16 (GY/BN or WH) C2949A-15 C3371B-4, then ground VMR20 (BN/WH or WH) C2949A-3 C3371B-3, then ground VMR21 (BU/BN or RD) C2949A-5 C3371A-4, then ground VMR17 (VT/GN or RD) C2949A-20 Ground DMR20 C2949A-21 Ground DMR28

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) and the suspect DVD player, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) and ground?

Yes
GO to P7.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

P5 CHECK THE RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) AUDIO OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) C2949B.
