Side Air Bag Module - With Fold Flat
Removal
WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: If the seat side air bag cover has been damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the air bag material has been exposed, install a new seat side air bag module. Never try to repair the seat side air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat back pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be installed. The seat back frame should be installed new if necessary.
NOTE: When replacing the side air bag after deployment, refer to Seats for additional information concerning new side air bag installation.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.
NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
All seats
1. Remove the passenger seat.
2. Remove the inboard lower recliner cover.
1. Remove the screw at the back of the inboard lower recliner cover.
2. Remove the screw at the side of the inboard lower recliner cover.
3. Pull out at the rear of the inboard lower recliner cover to release the retainers and remove.
3. Remove the inboard upper recliner cover.
1. Pull at the front and release the clip.
2. Rotate the inboard upper recliner cover clockwise and remove.
4. Separate the fold-flat cable retainer, cover and DVD player wire harness pin-type retainers (if equipped) from the inboard recliner.
5. If equipped, remove the manual lumbar handle.
1. Push the cushion trim cover and foam pad back and locate the manual lumbar handle clip under the cushion side shield.
2. Remove the clip and slide the manual lumbar handle off the shaft.
6. NOTE: For retainer clarity, inside of cushion side shield shown.
Separate the cushion side shield from the cushion frame.
1. Remove the screw at the back of the cushion side shield.
2. Remove the screw at the side of the cushion side shield.
3. Remove the screw at the front of the cushion side shield.
4. Pull out on the cushion side shield to release the 4 clips and separate.
- If equipped, disconnect the seat control switch electrical connector.
7. Remove the outboard upper recliner cover.
1. Pull at the front and release the clip.
2. Pivot the top of the outboard upper recliner cover back and remove.
- Pull the fold-flat release strap out through the opening.
8. Using the strap on the outboard recliner, fold the backrest down to the fold-flat position.
9. Separate the wire harness and cable retainers.
1. Remove the pin-type retainers, release the cushion trim cover outboard J-clips and position the flap aside.
2. If equipped, separate the lumbar cable retainers.
3. If equipped, pull the manual lumbar cable cover out of the adjuster.
4. Separate the side air bag module wire harness pin-type retainers.
5. Separate the outboard fold-flat cable and cover from the recliner.
10. If equipped, remove the manual lumbar cable from the adjuster.
11. Open the backrest trim cover in the following sequence.
1. Separate the backrest trim cover lower J-clips.
2. Release the backrest trim cover clips.
3. Open the zippers.
Seats with a DVD player
12. Detach the DVD player electrical connector and wire harness retainers.
13. Detach the DVD player wire harness retainers.
14. Detach the retainers and route out the DVD player wire harness.
15. Detach the cushion cover J-clip and pin-type retainer.
16. Seats with power track, disconnect electrical connectors and separate pin-type retainers from under the seat.
1. Separate the connector and wire harness retainers.
2. Slide the side air bag electrical connector locking clip back.
3. Push the tab in and disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
4. Disconnect the backrest feed electrical connector.
17. Seats with manual track, disconnect the electrical connector and separate pin-type retainers from under the seat.
1. Separate the side air bag module electrical connector and wire harness retainers.
2. Slide the side air bag electrical connector locking clip back.
3. Push the tab in and disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
18. Route the wire harness out from under the seat.
19. Position the backrest trim cover aside and remove the 4 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts (2 shown). Remove the backrest.
20. Invert the backrest trim cover up and remove the first row of hog rings.
21. Invert the backrest trim cover up to expose the side air bag module deployment chute.
- Feed the fold-flat cable, lumbar cable (if equipped) and backrest wire harness through the side openings of the backrest trim cover.
22. Squeeze the ends of the deployment chute clips together and open the deployment chute.
23. Invert the backrest trim cover up and pull the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad.
24. Invert the backrest trim cover up and remove the second row of hog rings.
25. NOTE: Note the side air bag module wiring routing for installation.
Release the side air bag module wire harness retainers from the backrest frame.
26. Seats with power track, disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector and separate the pin-type retainer from the backrest frame.
27. Remove the 2 nuts and side air bag module.
Installation
WARNING: Check the seat side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Before installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:
- Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
- Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
- Install new parts if damaged.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: The side air bag modules are keyed left and right. If the side air bag module locator pin does not align to the backrest frame hole, the wrong side air bag module is being installed.
All seats
1. Seats with power track, position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
1. Position the side air bag module and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
2. Route the wire harness, connect the electrical connector and attach the pin-type retainer.
2. Seats with manual track, position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
3. Seats with manual track, position the side air bag wire harness and install the pin-type retainer.
4. Roll the backrest trim cover down and position both ends of the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad opening.
5. Position the deployment chute around the side air bag module.
1. Insert the outboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the backrest frame.
2. Insert the inboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the backrest frame, pulling it around the inboard side of the backrest frame.
6. Engage the side air bag deployment chute retaining clips and snap them together.
- The side air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the backrest frame.
- Align the side air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it is centered around the side air bag module.
7. From the rear of the backrest, attach the backrest trim cover J-clip to the backrest frame wire.
8. Roll the backrest trim cover down and install the 3 second row hog rings.
9. Roll the backrest trim cover down and install the 3 first row hog rings.
10. Roll the backrest trim cover all the way down.
11. Route the wire harness and cables out through the sides of backrest trim cover.
12. Position the inboard recliner to the backrest frame and install the 2 inboard recliner-to-backrest frame bolts finger-tight.
- Make sure the fold-flat cable is routed out through the backrest trim cover before installing the inboard recliner.
13. Position the outboard recliner to the backrest frame and install the 2 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts finger-tight.
- Make sure the fold-flat cable, manual lumbar cable (if equipped) and backrest feed wire harness are routed out through the backrest trim cover before installing the inboard recliner, if equipped.
14. Install the 4 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts (2 shown).
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
15. Attach the cables and wire harness to the outboard recliner in the following sequence.
1. If equipped, attach the manual lumbar cable retainer to the outboard recliner.
2. Attach the side air bag module wire harness pin-type retainer to the outboard recliner.
3. Attach the fold-flat cable retainer and cover to the outboard recliner.
16. Attach the fold-flat cable retainer and cover to the inboard recliner.
17. Close the zippers and attach the backrest trim cover clips.
18. Attach the backrest trim cover lower J-clips.
19. Seats with manual track, route the side air bag module wire harness under the seat.
20. Attach the outboard cushion trim cover J-clips and install the pin-type retainer.
21. Seats with manual track, connect the electrical connector and attach the pin-type retainers under the seat.
1. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector and slide the locking clip to the lock position.
2. Route the wire harness and attach the side air bag module electrical connector and wire harness retainers.
22. Seats with power track, connect electrical connectors and attach the pin-type retainers under the seat.
1. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector and slide the locking clip to the lock position.
2. Connect the backrest feed electrical connector.
3. Route the wire harness and attach the connectors and wire harness retainers.
23. Attach the fold-flat cable retainer and cover to the inboard recliner.
24. Close the backrest trim cover in the following sequence.
1. Close the zippers.
2. Attach the backrest trim cover clips.
3. Attach the backrest trim cover lower J-clips.
Seats with a DVD player
25. Route and attach the DVD player wire harness and attach the retainers. For correct passenger seat wire harness routing, refer to the General Procedures portion of Seats.
26. Route and attach the DVD player wire harness and electrical connector retainers.
27. Route and attach the DVD player wire harness retainers.
28. Attach the cushion cover J-clip and install the pin-type retainers.
All seats
29. Attach the cushion side shield in the following sequence. Return all retaining clips back to the cushion side shield before attaching to the seat.
1. Align the 4 cushion side shield clips to the seat and push in seating the clips.
2. Install the screw at the front of the cushion side shield.
3. Install the screw at the rear of the cushion side shield.
4. Install the scrivet at the rear of the cushion side shield.
30. If equipped, install the manual lumbar handle in the following sequence.
1. Install the clip onto the manual lumbar handle.
2. Align the splines of the manual lumbar handle to the manual lumbar shaft.
3. Push the manual lumbar handle onto the manual lumbar shaft, seating the clip.
31. Install the passenger seat. For additional information, refer to the Removal and Installation portion of Seats.
