Campaign - Convertible Top Roof Side Pad repair: Overview

83ford1 December, 1983

To: All Ford Dealers

Subject: Owner Notification Program M27 - 1983-Model Mustang Convertible Top Roof Side Pads

The purpose of this letter is to advise you of a condition that may exist on certain 1983-model Mustang convertible vehicles produced prior to August 16, 1983, and to request your assistance in inspecting and, if necessary, correcting affected units delivered to owners and units in your inventory. Technical and administrative instructions are provided in Attachment I. A copy of the letter being sent by the Company to owners is provided in Attachment II.

The condition involves the convertible top roof side pads. With the convertible top in a full-down position, the ends of the dust cover front retainer and/or the corners of the rear seat back may contact and eventually damage the roof side pads. The area where the damage could occur is between the number two roof bow and the windshield header.

Owners will be advised that they may return their vehicles to any Ford dealership for inspection to determine if the roof side pads are damaged, or if the dust cover front retainer ends and/or the rear seat back corners are contacting the roof side pads. The inspection and any necessary repairs are to be provided at no charge to the owners.

Owners will also be advised that if they prefer, they may perform the inspection. Instructions and illustrations will be provided to assist them in performing the inspection. Owners will be asked to not cycle their vehicle's convertible top any more than necessary until it has been inspected and/or repaired.

Enclosed with the letter to owners will be a pamphlet which provides helpful hints to assist in the operation of the convertible top and installation of the dust cover. One major change from previous instructions provided in the Owner Guide for these vehicles is that it is not necessary to unzip the back window to lower the convertible top.

The pamphlet is a supplement to the Owner Guide, and your service personnel are asked to place a copy of the pamphlet in the glove compartment of those units identified as "stock" on the enclosed vehicle listing which, according to our records, were delivered to your dealership. A quantity of pamphlets is enclosed for this purpose.

We ask that you contact owners of recently delivered vehicles whose names and addresses do not appear on the listing. Please advise those owners of this program and arrange to inspect and, if necessary, correct their vehicles as promptly as possible. Be sure to advise the owners to minimize cycling the convertible tops of their vehicles until the inspection has been performed and any necessary corrections are made.

Your assistance in the timely administration of this program is appreciated in order to help assure continued owner satisfaction with the new Mustang convertible.
