CONVERTIBLE - GLASS REAR REPLACEMENT AND/OR SERVICE OF SEAL TO GLASS
FORD 1983-84 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE
FIGURE 1:
Occasional reports have been received concerning resealing or reinstalling the glass and/or retainer on the rear window of the Mustang Convertible. A separation occurs between the PVC retainer and the glass or the fabric (Figure 1). This seldom causes water leaks, but creates a poor performance.
The two known urethane-based materials on the market suitable for servicing this are supplied by Kent Industries. The Ureset 212 is humidity-cured and is best used for replacement of the glass in the panel. The other, Urepatch, is a two-part urethane that sets up rapidly and is ideal for small jobs, such as patching. Other equivalent urethane-based materials may be used.
Glass Replacement
1. Remove the plastic strip holding the top edge of the top sling to the body and fold the top of the sling down.
2. Remove the ten bolts holding the bottom of the rear window assembly to the body.
3. Unzip the rear window from across the top bow.
4. Place the rear window assembly on a clean bench.
FIGURE 2:
5. Using a sharp razor knife, cut the urethane and glass from the PVC retainer (caution should be used if the glass is broken). This should leave a clean surface on both inside surfaces of the retainer (Figure 2).
FIGURE 3:
6. Place the glass in the retainer and apply a strip of tape on the glass around the edge approximately 1/8" from the retainer (Figure 3). (Be sure the glass is clean where the glue is to be applied.)
7. Cover the fabric attached to the retainer with tape (Figure 3).
FIGURE 4:
8. Cut the tube end of the Ureset or equivalent urethane adhesive sealant at an angle exposing a 1/8" opening and run a 1/8" bead around the outside edge of the glass under the retainer (Figure 4).
9. Press the retainer against the glass.
10. Turn the entire assembly over on the bench and repeat steps 6 through 9.
11. Clamp the retainer in place to the glass with enough pressure to make a good seal without distorting the retainer.
12. With a putty stick or bondo squeegee, wipe the excess urethane and smooth the urethane between the glass and the retainer.
13. Allow 12 hours for the Ureset 212 or equivalent urethane adhesive sealant to cure, and then reinstall the assembly in the vehicle.
For Patching or Resealing
This operation may be performed with the glass assembly in the car.
1. Cut a clean surface on the retainer with a razor knife and clean the glass or fabric of all urethane, oil, or grease (a minimal area of 3" should be cleaned).
FIGURE 3:
2. Tape the glass along the edge 1/8" away from the retainer in the area to be serviced (Figure 3).
3. Tape the retainer and fabric in the same manner along the area to be serviced (Figure 3).
4. Follow the instructions for mixing the two-part urethane. Mix only enough to service the areas in question.
5. Use a putty stick or squeegee to install the mixture into the opening and smooth the surface off between the tape strips.
6. Peel the tape off the glass and retainer or fabric.
7. Allow the mixture to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before releasing unit to customer.
