Convertible Top Cylinder - Breaks/Cracks

FORD 1983 MUSTANG
To prevent repeat service of the top cylinder, inspect the pivot brackets and cylinder pins for proper alignment and clearance. The following procedure provides inspection and modification procedures if required.
1. With the top up and latched in place look down into the area behind the quarter window where the top cylinder is located.

2. Using a set of feeler gages check the clearance between the pivot bracket and the pivot boss on the cylinder. This gap should not exceed .064 inches (Figure 1 Sec. C-C).
3. Check for a clearance between the pivot bracket and the support bracket.
4. If both conditions are good perform only steps 5 through 15, and 18, 21 through 23.
5. Remove rear seat cushion and seat back (Shop Manual, Section 41-14).
6. Remove 1/4 window handle.
7. The two screws on the seat belt guide.

8. Remove 4 screws on upper quarter trim panel and remove panel (Figure 2).

9. Remove 7 screws on lower quarter trim panel (one under seat belt guide. Figure 3).
10. Remove lower quarter trim panel.
11. Loosen top latches to remove tension from mechanism.

12. Remove clip holding pin and pin on top cylinder rod. (Figure 4, Items 83 and 149).
13. Remove nut(s) holding top cylinder pivot bracket(s), See Figure 4 and remove bracket. Items 180 and 181.

14. Grind .090 off the end of the pin removed in step 12 (Figure 5 Sec. A-A).

15. If a clearance exists between the pivot bracket and support, grind off the weld interference as shown (Figure 6 Sec. D-D).
a. Reinstall pivot bracket using torque prevailing nut 33770S2 and check clearance again at cylinder boss (Torque to 8-10 ft.lbs.).
16. If the clearance at the cylinder boss exceeds .065
inches when no gap exists between the pivot bracket and support bracket remove the pivot bracket.

17. Using the template (Figure 7) drill a 9/32 hole in the pivot bracket as shown.
18. Install pivot bracket on support bracket using torque prevailing nut (33770S2) and torque to 8-10 ft.lbs.
19. Using the hole in the pivot bracket as a guide drill the support bracket through both sides.
20. Install 3" x 1/4-20 bolt (300888-S36 Grade 5) and torque prevailing nut (337777-S8) through support and pivot bracket. Torque to 8-10 ft.lbs. and close the clearance at the boss (Figure 7).
21. Reinstall pin removed in step 12.
22. Clean up drill chips and grindings.
23. Reinstall quarter trim panels and window handle.
24. Tighten top latches.
