Article No. 90-5-1

FORD: 1979-90 MUSTANG

ISSUE: "Squeaks" and "rattles" in the rear area of the car may be coming from the liftgate. This may be caused by a loose fit when the liftgate is in the full latched position.

Figure 1:

ACTION: Install additional rubber bumpers on the liftgate to improve the the fit and eliminate movement, Figure 1. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Figure 2:

LOCATING NEW BUMPER

1. Place a straight edge on the window edge. Draw a "reference line" to the outside edge of the liftgate on the underside of the lift gate, Figure 2.

2. Draw a line parallel to the "reference line" about 1" (25 mm) toward the front of the vehicle. Call this "Line A", Figure 2.

3. On the inclined surface containing the spot welds, locate an area between the "reference line" and "Line A" that is free from welds. In this weld free area, measure up about 1/2" (13 mm) from the bend and mark this point as "Point B" as shown in Figure 2.

4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the other side of the liftgate.

Figure 3:

RUBBER BUMPER INSTALLATION

1. Drill a 5/16" diameter hole perpendicular to the inclined surface at each position marked "Point B", Figure 3.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE NOT TO DAMAGE THE OUTER LIFTGATE PANEL.

2. Inspect each hole for any sharp burrs and remove as necessary.

3. Insert a rubber bumper in each hole, Figure 3.
