TRANSMISSION MANUAL-T50D 5-SPEED - GEAR SHIFT LEVER BOLT BREAKAGE (SVO)

FORD 1984 MUSTANG (SVO)

On some early 1984 Mustang SVO vehicles built prior to January 31, 1984, the gear shift lever may develop a very loose feeling. This condition may be caused by the breakage of one of the two gear shift lever attaching bolts. The service fix for a broken bolt condition is to replace both bolts with current service stock.

Removal

1. Remove the four bolts attaching shift boot to floor pan.
2. Remove the two bolts attaching the shift lever to transmission.

Installation

1. Install the two bolts (N803410-S2) and washers attaching the shift lever to transmission. Tighten to 31-43 N-m (23-32 ft.lbs.).

NOTE: Shift lever bolts must only be installed in one direction (from right side of shift lever).
2. Install the four bolts attaching the shift boot to floor pan. Tighten to 4.1-9.5 N-m (3-7 ft.lbs.).
