A/T - Direct Clutch Failure/Erratic Reverse Engagement1
TSB 88-35 (Aug.)SUBJECT: A4LD
PROBLEM:
Direct clutch failure and/or erratic reverse engagement.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: A misaligned manual valve.
When diagnosing an A4LD for direct clutch failure, several things should be checked:
1. Center bore of direct drum where the sealing rings contact for out of round
2. Condition of "Viton" rings on center support. Always properly install new "Viton" rings when servicing, see TSB 86-59
3. Direct clutch piston center bore for out of round
4. Manual valve adjustment (see figure). This is critical because reverse oil is exhausted at the manual valve when the selector is put in the "D4" position. If the manual valve is not aligned, it may not allow reverse oil to exhaust properly, and the direct clutches may drag in 1st and 2nd gears.
