Safety Belt Retractor Replacement

1. Remove both rear seat safety belt retractor assemblies. Refer to Figure 2 and the 1990 Mustang Shop Manual, Section 41-50, for service details.
2. Install two new improved rear seat safety belt retractor assemblies which have a higher one-piece retractor boot, Figure 2. Tighten the attaching bolts to 22-32 lb.ft. (30-43 N-m).
3. See if the interference condition has been eliminated.
a. Operate the top to make sure the frontal edge of the back window glass does not contact the new retractors.
NOTE: THERE MUST BE A MINIMUM OF .350 (8.9 MM) CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE TOP PORTION OF THE RETRACTORS AND THE FRONT EDGE OF THE BACK WINDOW GLASS.
b. If the required clearance has been achieved, replace the rear glass and operate the top again to be sure that the corrective action eliminated the interference.
c. If the required clearance has not been achieved, proceed with following front trim panel fitting procedure.
