Seat Back Repositioning

NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE ON UNITS BUILT AFTER 2/20/90.

1. Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back.

2. Remove the quarter trim panels. Refer to the 1990 Mustang Shop Manual, Section 45-03 for removal information.

3. Remove the eight (8) blind rivets holding both sides of the rear seat back frame support to the underbody, Figures 6 & 7.

CAUTION: ONLY REMOVE THE RIVETS SHOWN IN FIGURE 7.

4. Loosen the three (3) nuts holding the rear seat back frame support to the side structure, Figure 7.

5. Using a magnetic protractor, position it to either side of the rear seat back frame support as shown in Figure 8 and note the reading.
6. Reposition the rear seat back frame support.

a. With the help of an assistant, grasp the top of either side of the rear seat back frame support.

b. Slowly pull the support forward until the protractor reads a MAXIMUM of three (3) degrees from the previous reading.

c. Hold it in that position while tightening the three (3) retaining nuts securely.

7. Repeat Step # 6 on the opposite side of the car.

8. Install new rivets to hold both sides of the rear seat back frame support to the underbody.

a. For each of the blind rivets previously removed, locate new attaching hole locations, not more than 5/8" (15.8 mm) from the old hole centers.

b. Prick punch and drill four (4) new 13/64" (5.1 mm) diameter holes through the frame support and the body side assembly, Figure
7. Perform this step on both sides of the car.

CAUTION: DO NOT DRILL HOLES IN THE SHADED AREA INDICATED IN FIGURE 7.

c. Install a new 3/16" (4.76 mm) steel blind rivet (380098-S2) at each new hole location, Figure 7.

9. See if the interference condition has been eliminated.

10. Install the quarter trim panels.

11. Install the rear seat cushion and seat back.

12. Replace the rear glass and operate the top again to confirm the correction.
