Article No. 90-21-8
FORD: 1989-90 TAURUS SHO

ISSUE: A hard starting condition described as excessive cranking during start-up may be caused by a contaminated fuel pressure regulator. The contamination will cause a no fuel pressure condition.

ACTION: Use the following diagnostic procedure to determine if a new fuel pressure regulator is required. The new fuel pressure regulator has an integral filter to guard against contamination.

WARNING: FOLLOW ALL PRECAUTIONARY INFORMATION LISTED IN THE APPROPRIATE MODEL YEAR TAURUS/SABLE SHOP MANUAL SECTION 24 WHEN PERFORMING SERVICE TO THE FUEL SYSTEM.

1. Connect an EFI Fuel Pressure Regulator Gauge, Rotunda Tool T80L-9974-B, to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail.

2. Turn the ignition key to the ON postion. Do not start the engine.

3. Wait for the fuel pump to stop running.
4. After the fuel pump stops running, note the pressure shown on the pressure gauge.

5. If there is no pressure, install a new fuel pressure regulator, (E9DZ-9C968-B). If the fuel pressure is OK, use normal diagnostics as listed in the Shop Manual.

6. If a new pressure regulator is installed, recheck the fuel pressure. The normal fuel pressure is 39 psi.
