LAMPS - "CHECK OIL" LIGHT COMES ON BY MISTAKE WHEN "LOW COOLANT" WARNING LIGHT IS ACTIVATED - SHO MODELS BUILT FROM JOB 1 TO 12/2/90


FORD: 1991 TAURUS


ISSUE: The "Check Oil" light may come on when the "Low Coolant" Warning Light is activated. This condition can be identified by the "Check Oil" and "Low Coolant" warning lights coming on simultaneously after the vehicle is started. This occurs because of an incorrect wiring connection in Circuit # 41.

ACTION: Modify Circuit # 41 as described in the following service procedure.


1. Confirm the condition.

a. Add coolant to full level.

b. Add oil to full level.

c. Remove coolant level sensor from reservoir.

d. Restart vehicle.

e. If "Low Coolant" and "Check Oil" warning lights go off, the wiring concern exists.


2. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to the 1991 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 33-01, for removal details.

3. Modify Circuit # 41.

a. Cut Circuit # 41 wire (Black/Lt. Blue) from Pin 5 located on the back of the 14 pin connector.

CAUTION: DO NOT CUT CIRCUIT # 464 WIRE (BLACK/PINK) OR PIN 5 FROM THE 14 PIN CONNECTOR.

b. Refer to the 1991 Taurus/Sable EVTM, Page 150-28, for wiring details.

4. Apply electrical tape to Circuit # 41 wire where it was cut.

5. Replace the instrument cluster.

6. Check operation of the "Low Coolant" and "Check Oil" warning lights.
