This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the build date range contained in the title block and to add a note clarifying which 1993 Taurus models are equipped with R-134a refrigerant systems.
ISSUE:
Air conditioning service ports on R-134a-equipped vehicles may leak, resulting in poor or no A/C performance. This condition may be caused by the material used in the grommet which seals the service ports.
ACTION:
Replace both service ports with new ports which have valve pin grommets made from an improved material. Refer to the following procedure and to the Service Manual for service details.
1. Following the recovery procedure, discharge refrigerant from A/C system at the low pressure service port located on the suction line near the compressor (refer to the appropriate Service Manual, Section 12-00-49, for the recommended service procedure).
CAUTION:
USE EXTREME CARE AND OBSERVE ALL SAFETY AND SERVICE PRECAUTIONS RELATED TO THE USE OF REFRIGERANTS.
2. Remove manifold gauge set or refrigerant recycling station hose from service port.
3. Using R-134a High Side A/C Fitting Socket D94L-19703-A, or equivalent, remove the high pressure service port and install replacement service port (F3AZ-19E762-A). The high pressure service port is located on the liquid line adjacent to the condenser, at the right hand front corner of the engine compartment.
4. Using R-134a Low Side A/C Fitting Socket D94L-19703-B, or equivalent, remove the low pressure service port and install replacement service port (F3AZ-19E762-B). The low pressure service port is located on the suction line near the accumulator on the Taurus, and between the accumulator and the compressor on the Mark VIII.
5. Leak test, evacuate and recharge refrigerant system. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual, Section 12-00.
6. Check system for proper operation.
NOTE:
NOT ALL 1993 TAURUS 3.OL MODELS ARE EQUIPPED WITH R-134a REFRIGERANT SYSTEMS. ONLY 1993 MODEL TAURUS VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SHIPPED TO DALLAS AND HOUSTON DISTRICTS ARE EQUIPPED WITH R-134a REFRIGERANT SYSTEMS.
