Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation

ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM

OIL PUMP:
The engine lubrication system is of the force-feed type in which oil is supplied from the oil pump under full pressure to the:
^ Crankshaft.
^ Connecting rod bearings.
^ Hydraulic valve tappets.
^ Camshaft bearings.

A controlled volume of oil through the valve tappets is supplied to the:
^ Push rods.
^ Rocker arms.

All other moving parts are lubricated by gravity flow or splash.

The rotary gear-type oil pump:
^ Develops the oil pressure.
^ Is located in the engine front cover.
^ Is rotated by the camshaft position sensor housing shaft through an oil pump intermediate shaft.

A full flow oil bypass filter is externally mounted on the oil pump and filter body and normally all engine oil passes through the oil bypass filter element. However, if the oil bypass filter element should become restricted, a spring-loaded bypass valve will open, allowing an uninterrupted flow of oil to the engine's moving parts.

OIL PAN:
The molded aluminum oil pan is bolted to the bottom of the cylinder block.
The oil pan acts as a reservoir holding lubricating oil that is pumped through the engine by the oil pump after start up.
