Timing Belt: Adjustments

Note: Perform the following for adjustment of the timing belt. If the replacement of the timing belt is required, proceed to Removal and Installation Procedures of the timing belt. Service and Repair

1. Disconnect wiring to ignition control module.
2. Remove engine air inlet connector bolts.
3. Loosen engine air inlet connector hose clamps (8287).

Intake Manifold Assembly:

4. Remove engine air inlet connector (9C674).
5. Remove upper outer timing belt cover (6E004).
6. Place transaxle in Neutral.

White Index Mark:

Camshaft Sprocket Marks:

7. Set engine at TDC No. 1 cylinder.
Ensure that white index mark on crankshaft vibration damper and pulley aligns with 0 degree index mark on lower outer timing belt cover and that index marks on intake camshaft sprocket spacers (6265) align with index mark on upper inner timing belt cover (6E006).
8. Raise vehicle on hoist.
9. Remove RH front wheel and tire assembly.
10. Loosen front fender splash shield (16102) and place out of the way.
11. Remove plastic door in the lower outer timing belt cover to gain access to the timing belt tensioner idler pulley.

Timing Belt Tensioner Idler Pulley:

12. Loosen the 14mm nut on the timing belt tensioner idler pulley.
Rotate the timing belt tensioner idler pulley 180 degrees clockwise using an Allen wrench.
Tighten the timing belt tensioner idler pulley nut to hold pulley in the "unload position."
13. Release the timing belt tensioner idler pulley locknut and leave loose.

Yellow Index Mark:

14. Rotate crankshaft two revolutions in the clockwise direction until the yellow index mark on crankshaft vibration damper and pulley aligns with 0 degree mark on lower outer timing belt cover.
15. Tighten 14mm timing belt tensioner idler pulley locknut to 33-51 Nm (24-38 ft lbs).

White Index Mark:

16. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees more in the clockwise direction until the white index mark on the crankshaft vibration damper and pulley aligns with 0 degree index mark on lower outer timing belt cover.
17. Lower vehicle.

Camshaft Sprocket Marks:

18. Ensure index marks on camshaft sprocket (6256) align with index marks on upper inner timing belt cover.
19. Install upper outer timing belt cover.
Tighten retaining bolts to 7-11 Nm (62-97 In lbs).
20. Install engine air inlet connector.
Tighten bolts to 15-23 Nm (11-17 ft lbs) and hose clamps securely.
21. Connect wiring to ignition control module.
22. Raise vehicle.
23. Install plastic door in the lower outer timing belt cover.
24. Install front fender splash shield.
25. Install RH front tire and wheel assembly.
Tighten wheel lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-105 ft lbs).
26. Lower vehicle.
