Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Drain cooling system, then remove timing belt covers.2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Remove cylinder head valve covers.
4. Remove camshafts.

5. Remove three seal plate bolts, then the seal plate.
6. Remove coolant elbow, then raise and support vehicle.
7. Disconnect oxygen sensor connectors and lower catalytic converter inlet pipes, then lower the vehicle.
8. Remove hydraulic lash adjusters from cylinder head and mark them for installation reference.
NOTE: Adjuster failure may result if reused adjusters are not returned to the bores from which they were removed. Store adjusters intended for reuse upside-down in an oil-filled container.

9. Using sequence shown, remove cylinder head bolts in two or three steps and discard bolts.
10. Remove cylinder head and discard gasket.

11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Because left and right head gaskets are not interchangeable, ensure gasket identifying mark faces up when gasket is installed.
b. Clean engine oil should be applied to lash adjuster friction surfaces.
c. Adjusters to be reused must return to their original bores.
d. Apply clean engine oil to threads of new cylinder head bolts.
e. Torque bolts in sequence shown to 17-19 ft lb in two or three steps, then place a small paint mark anywhere along the circumference of each bolt head and tighten bolts 85-95°. Tighten bolts an additional 85-95°.
