Engine: Service and Repair
1. Relieve fuel system pressure.2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. Remove fresh air duct and air cleaner assembly.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove front tires and lower splash shields.
6. Remove six transverse member mounting bolts, then the transverse member.
7. Remove transaxle cradle attaching bolts and nuts, then the cradle.
8. Disconnect electrical connector from front oxygen sensor.
9. Remove three nuts from lefthand converter inlet pipe, then disconnect electrical connector from rear oxygen sensor.
10. Remove three nuts from rear exhaust manifold-to-converter inlet pipe flange.
11. On models with manual transaxle, remove nut and washer, then remove extension bar from transaxle.
12. Remove transaxle shift linkage through-bolt and nut, then disconnect linkage from transaxle.
13. Disconnect A/C and oil pressure switch electrical connectors.
14. On models with manual transaxle, remove slave cylinder hydraulic line from cylinder, then the spring clips from the line.
15. Remove halfshafts.
16. Remove rear transaxle mount.
17. Loosen center locknut on power steering/water pump belt tensioner, then loosen tensioner adjusting bolt and remove belt. Working through the pump pulley, remove three steering pump mounting bolts.
18. Separate steering pump from rear bracket, then position pump aside.
19. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside. Leave refrigerant lines connected, but do not allow compressor to hang by them.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. On models with manual transaxle, separate power steering hose bracket from steering pump, loosen generator and A/C belt tensioner locknut and adjusting bolt, then remove belt.
22. On all models, drain cooling system.
23. Disconnect coolant overflow hose from engine coolant overflow reservoir, then remove outlet (upper) hose from engine coolant elbow and disconnect radiator cooling fan connector.
24. Remove inlet (lower) hose from thermostat housing, then the two radiator hold-down bolts.
25. Remove radiator and cooling fans.
26. Disconnect generator electrical connections. Label for installation reference.
Engine Electrical Connectors:
27. Disconnect engine electrical and vacuum connections. Label for installation reference.
28. Disconnect heater hoses from engine block, then the fuel supply line from fuel rails.
29. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body; then, with fuel lines connected, remove fuel filter and position aside.
30. Attach lifting cables to engine eye hooks and lift engine to tighten cables.
31. Remove left side transaxle mount nuts and through-bolt.
32. Remove both front transaxle mount nuts.
33. Remove two nuts and through bolt from righthand side engine mount, then the mount.
34. Remove engine and transaxle from vehicle. If necessary, separate engine from transaxle.
