Idle Speed: Adjustments

1. Apply the parking brake control and ensure that the gearshift lever is set in PARK (P) (A/T) or NEUTRAL (M/T).
2. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.

NOTE: Ensure all electrical loads (headlamps, blower motor, heated back window, etc.) are turned OFF.

3. Connect the tachometer positive lead of Rotunda(r) 88 Digital Multimeter 105-00053 or equivalent to the number one spark plug wire.

Data Link Connector:

4. Connect a jumper wire between terminals STI (TEN) and GND of the Data Link Connector (DLC) located in the left hand front corner of the engine compartment, near the battery.

WARNING: Do not check the idle speed while the engine cooling fan motor is operating.

5. The idle speed should be 650 rpm +/- 50 rpm. If the idle speed is not within specifications, proceed to the next step.
6. Connect Rotunda(r) Timing Analyzer 164-R0257 or equivalent.
7. Verify the ignition timing is 9-11° (10° +/- 1°) BTDC.

Timing Marks:

8. If the ignition timing is not within specifications, loosen the distributor bolts and adjust the ignition timing. Tighten the distributor bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 lb ft).
9. Remove the STI (TEN) to ground terminal jumper wire.
10. Verify the ignition timing is between 6° and 18° (12° +/- 6°) BTDC.
11. Connect a jumper wire between terminals STI (TEN) and GND of the DLC located in the left hand front corner of the engine compartment, near the battery.

Idle Speed Adjustment Screw:

12. Adjust the idle speed by turning the throttle body idle speed adjustment screw until the idle speed of 650 rpm +/- 50 rpm is attained.
13. Turn the engine OFF.
14. Remove the STI (TEN) to ground terminal jumper wire.
15. Remove the tachometer and the timing light.

Inserting Feeler Gauge:

16. Insert a 0.15 mm (0.006 inch) feeler gauge between the stopper and the throttle body lever.

Throttle Position Sensor:

17. Continuity should exist between terminals as shown.
18. Insert a 0.50 mm (0.020 inch) feeler gauge between the stopper and the throttle body lever.
19. Continuity should not exist between terminals as shown.
20. If not within specifications, adjust the throttle position sensor. Tighten the throttle position sensor screws to 2 Nm (14-20 lb in).
