Ignition Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVALCAUTION: Do not pull on wire directly, or it may become separated from the connector inside the boot.
1. When removing distributor to spark plug wires from the spark plugs, grasp and twist the boot back and forth on the plug insulator to free the boot.
2. When removing distributor to spark plug wires from distributor cap grasp the boot by hand and remove with a twisting and pulling motion.
INSTALLATION
1. Whenever a distributor to spark plug wire is removed for any reason from a spark plug or distributor cap, or a new distributor to spark plug wire is installed, Silicone Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A must be applied to the boot before it is reconnected. Using a small clean tool, coat the entire interior surface of the boot.

2. Install each distributor to spark plug wire on the proper terminal of the distributor cap. Make sure the distributor to spark plug wires are all the way down over their terminals. The number 1 terminal is identified on the distributor cap. Install the spark plug wires starting with the number 1 terminal.
3. Remove the ignition wire separators from the old distributor to spark plug wires and install them on the new wires in the same relative position. Install the wires in the ignition wire separators on the valve covers.
4. Connect distributor to spark plug wires to the proper spark plugs.
