Engine: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION
The 3.4L engine is an 8 cylinder "V" gasoline engine.

CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder heads are cast aluminum and house the dual overhead camshafts (DOHC). There are 4 valves per cylinder.

INTAKE MANIFOLD
The intake manifold is aluminum.

CYLINDER BLOCK
The cylinder block is a 60 degree V-block construction. It is cast aluminum with iron cylinder liners. It houses an engine balance shaft.

OIL PUMP
Pressurized oil is supplied by an oil pump that is driven by the crankshaft. The oil pump draws oil from the oil pan. The oil is routed through the oil pump screen cover and tube, oil pump, oil filter, crankshaft main bearings and connecting rod bearings, to the camshaft bearings and rocker arms.

POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV)
This engine incorporates a closed-type positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system and exhaust emission control system. All engine/emission control systems are covered in Powertrain Management. To maintain the required exhaust emission levels, the fuel system, ignition system, and engine must be kept in good operating condition and meet recommended adjustment specifications.

AIR/FUEL SYSTEM
The fuel/air mixture needed for burning in the cylinders is provided by sequential multiport fuel injection (SFI).

SERVICING
