Engine: Description and Operation

CAUTION: The 3.4L 4V SHO engine has aluminum intake manifold, cylinder head, and a cast aluminum cylinder block with iron liners and requires a special corrosion inhibiting coolant to avoid cooling system damage.

The 3.4L 4V SHO engine has the following features:
- 60 degree V block construction
- balance shaft
- Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC)
- 4 valves per cylinder
- Sequential Multi-port Fuel Injection (SFI)

The ignition system is electronic (distributorless) with one ignition coil for each spark plug. This high energy ignition system is required for fast-burn combustion.

The air intake system utilizes a secondary intake port along with a primary intake port. The secondary port is opened and closed by an electronically operated Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) deactivation motor thus improving low and mid-range torque and fuel efficiency.

WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN BLADE HAS FIRST BEEN EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.

These engines incorporate:
- closed-type Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system.
- exhaust emission control system.

To maintain the required exhaust emission levels, the following must be kept in good operating condition and meet recommended adjustment specifications:
- engine
- fuel system
- ignition system

Make sure that the following engine components are not serviceable before replacing damaged or worn engine components:
- crankshaft
- cylinder heads
- valve guides
- exhaust valves
- intake valve
- camshafts
- cylinder block
