NOISE - "POPPING" OR "OIL CANNING" NOISE
FROM DRIVER'S FOOTWELL AREA

FORD:
1999-2000 MUSTANG

ISSUE
A "popping" or "oil canning" noise may be coming from the driver's footwell area, approximately 152-203 mm (6-8") rearward of where the driver's heel would rest when operating the accelerator pedal.

ACTION
"Peen" the floor pan area. This should reduce the possibility of noise. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

WARNING
FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER SERVICE PROCEDURES MAY RESULT IN AN INADVERTENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHEN SERVICING THE FLOOR PAN.

1. Disconnect the battery and wait 2 minutes. This will deactivate the air bag module and prevent an inadvertent air bag deployment.

2. Pull back the carpet covering the affected area. Refer to Figure 1 for approximate location.

3. Using a 1 lb. hammer, strike the floor pan and form approximately a 25 mm (1") long cross-car stiffening bead in the area of oil canning. Refer to Figure 2.

4. Verify that pressure in the affected area no longer causes the oil canning effect.

5. Reinstall carpeting.

6. Reconnect battery.
