Date:

3.8/4.2L IMRC Set Screw Warranty Repair

Issue

In some of the affected vehicles, the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) set screws may move out of their pre-set position during engine operation. These set screws are used to control the position of the secondary throttle plates in the closed position. This out of position condition may illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), affect engine idle quality, and affect optimal engine performance.

Action

Dealerships are to inspect the engine build date of the affected vehicles. If the engine build date is from August 2, 2001 through August 13, 2001, dealerships are instructed to apply thread locker (Loctite(R) 290) to the right and left IMRC set screws to secure them in place.

INSPECTION

1. For F-150 and Mustang: Open the hood.

2. For E-150: Remove the passenger side lower instrument panel (I/P) cover by disengaging the retaining clips, then remove the engine cover. See Figure 1.

3. Inspect the engine build date, which is located on the lower left corner of the sticker attached to the left valve cover. See Figure 2.

4. If the build date falls on or between 8/2/01 through 8/13/01, the service procedure must be performed.

5. If the build date is outside of the dates listed, the service procedure does not have to be performed. Close the hood, or install the engine cover and lower I/P cover.
